Routes into Teaching

School Based Initial Teacher Training - (SCITT)

This full-time, school-based initial teacher training programme usually takes a year to complete. It is run by a group of schools, often in partnership with a Higher Education Institution.

University-Based Course: PGCE

This is the traditional route into teaching, a one-year university course leading to a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). The course combines academic study with a significant period of teaching practice in a variety of schools.

University-Based Course: Flexible Route

Some university-based training programmes are designed to meet individual needs, allowing you to study around work or personal commitments. These also take previous experience into account and would suit people who have trained abroad, worked in HE or worked in an independent school.

Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)

This is a work-based route. It involves working in a school while training for Qualified Teacher Status. It usually takes one year full time but this can vary dependant on previous experience. You would be paid on the unqualified teachers pay scale. For more details about the Programme visit www.tda.gov.uk

The London Borough of Enfield is a member of the London North Consortium, which is an organiser of the Graduate Teacher Training Programme (Designated Recommending Body (DRB)).

Please note that in Enfield we expect you to find a school that would be willing to employ you to train with them. All schools decide whether they wish to participate or not and this can change from term to term dependant on circumstances. We are unable to provide a list of interested schools but a list of all schools is available here. However, it is worth remembering that a school is more likely to take you on if they know you, and hence doing voluntary work or becoming a teaching assistant at the school could be a good idea.

Additional information

Your fees for University-based and SCITT courses will be partially paid. In addition, you would receive a training bursary of 6,000, and for some secondary shortage subjects this could be greater.
